Venture Academy work by Roar

The short version. Venture Academy is a Christian school in the Chippewa Valley, built on a mission to empower Christ-centered leaders, designers, and innovators for a world it can’t yet imagine. Roar built the Venture Way: a North Star model that sets that whole vision in a hundred words or less, and a visual compass that makes it teachable.

Where they started. Venture had the substance of a strong mission, but not yet a shared way to hold it. The pieces that make a school’s identity real, its purpose, how it believes learning happens, the character it wants to form, and the outcomes it’s aiming for, existed, but not yet in one place a teacher, a parent, or a board member could point to and say “that’s us.” Venture wanted a model with “lensing”: something that reads clearly zoomed all the way in, as a single sentence, and zoomed all the way out, as the full picture.

The move. We ran Venture through Roar’s North Star process: workshops to surface the mission, the learning principles that guide how the school teaches, the mindsets that shape how the community lives together, and the results those mindsets and that teaching are meant to produce in a learner. From three initial directions, Venture chose a compass as the organizing metaphor, fitting for a school built on the idea of venturing into the unknown. We refined it through two more rounds until it held together at every zoom level: mission at the center, learning principles and mindsets as the rings around it, and eight learner identities, Creative Innovators, Gracious Collaborators, Self-Directed Learners, Imaginative Designers, Compassionate Citizens, Conscientious Disciples, Solution Seekers, and Empathic Leaders, at the points where the compass opens outward.

The result

One compass, four pillars, 100 words or less
The Venture Way, Venture Academy's North Star model, shown as a compass
The Venture Way: mission at the center, learning principles, mindsets, and results radiating out to eight learner identities.

What we made

The Venture Way, a North Star model built to be read at any distance. Zoomed all the way in, it is a single sentence: Venture's mission. Zoomed out, it is a full compass, mission at the center, learning principles and mindsets radiating around it, and eight learner identities, from Empathic Leaders to Compassionate Citizens, at the points. One model, readable at every distance a school actually needs it at.

  • Three initial concepts, developed and presented for direction
  • A refined concept, chosen and workshopped with the Venture team
  • The final Venture Way model: mission, learning principles, mindsets, and results in one compass
  • A narrative deck explaining how to read and use the model

What happened

The Venture Way gave Venture Academy a shared language, one compass the whole school can point to instead of a strategy document only leadership reads. It became the foundation for the MessagingEQ work that followed, a set of promise statements built on the same mission and mindsets the compass had already named.
