The North Star model ยท Roar's strategy framework

Your whole strategy, in one picture.

A North Star model brings your mission, your principles and practice, your cultural values, and your results into one picture. Built in a hundred words or less, and simple enough that anyone in your organization can hold it, teach it, and repeat it.

The why

Blurry strategy is a guess wearing a mission statement.

Every blurry brand we've met has the same root problem. It never got clear on the strategy, so every decision after that was a guess, in the classroom, in the boardroom, in the copy on the website. A North Star doesn't ask you to say more. It gets the picture in focus, so everyone from the board to the newest hire is pointing at the same thing, without checking with each other first.

The model

Four things. One picture.

The center

Mission

Why you exist and who you're called to serve. The one sentence you could not lose without losing yourselves.

How it happens

Principles & Practice

How you believe the work actually gets done: your teaching philosophy, your methodology, the how underneath everything else you do.

How you live it

Cultural Values

The mindsets and mantras that shape how your people live and work together. The character your culture protects and passes down.

What it produces

Results

The outcome, named as an identity, not a checklist. Who someone becomes because of you, not just what they can now do.

Any organization

The shape holds. What's inside it changes.

Mission Why the school exists, who it's called to serveWho you serve, and the change you exist to make in their livesThe reason you exist beyond revenueWho you're built to help, and the change you make possible for them
Principles & Practice Teaching philosophy, how learning happensYour program model, how you actually deliver the workProduct philosophy, how decisions get made, how you build and go to marketYour methodology, the way you work that a competitor can't just copy
Cultural Values Mindsets and mantras that shape the communityHow staff and volunteers treat the people you serve, and each otherHow the team works together internallyHow you operate, with clients and within your own practice
Results Who a student becomes, named as identitiesThe measurable change in the life of the person or community you serveWhat changes for the customer because you exist, not an internal KPIWhat's different in the client's organization once the engagement ends

One rule holds across every column. Results always describes a change in someone outside the organization, a student, a client, a customer, never an internal metric like revenue or headcount. That's what keeps a North Star honest.
