Incubate to Innovate work by Roar

The short version. One of the best parts of client work done right is the friendship it leaves behind. Roar’s history with Incubate to Innovate, an education consultancy that has since grown into one serving learning organizations more broadly, is exactly that: a decade of overlapping projects, shared clients, and an actual friendship, not just an invoice.

Where they started. Trey met Amanda, one of Incubate to Innovate’s co-founders alongside Angela, while he was still at The Mount Vernon School, at Fuse, a design-thinking conference Mount Vernon Ventures hosted. The connection stuck. When Roar first got started, Trey and Incubate to Innovate teamed up on a tool for one of Incubate’s own customers, a genuine win-win. It impressed the customer enough that Roar was invited onto the project the team went on to win with Bethel University.

The move. Since then, Roar and Incubate to Innovate have built a long list of work together. Roar helped the consultancy navigate its own repositioning, from an education consultancy to one that serves learning organizations more broadly, challenging the founders to widen their view beyond schools to for-profit companies too. Roar built a one-pager Incubate uses as a lead-generation piece at events, and branded and elevated a 120-page maker-space deployment kit, a turnkey, downloadable resource that gives any school what it needs to consider a maker space and maker program of its own. Roar has also helped Incubate codify and explain its own thinking, including a strategic explainer built around Incubate’s five-year journey toward exploratory and experiential learning, helping the team think through that process, put it into words, and build the visuals that help their customers understand what transformational change in education actually takes.

What we made:

  • Consultancy repositioning strategy, widening Incubate’s reach from schools to learning organizations broadly
  • A lead-generation one-pager used at events
  • Branding and design for a 120-page maker-space deployment kit
  • A strategic explainer codifying Incubate’s five-year journey toward exploratory and experiential learning

What happened

The relationship grew past Incubate's own projects and into their world: Roar has also worked directly with Incubate's customers, including Conger Meat Market and Venture Academy, and served as marketing partner for The Collaborative, the nonprofit spun out of Incubate's own signature event. Together, Incubate to Innovate and Roar have reached hundreds of educators across the Twin Cities and the Midwest, and collaborated on more than five projects beyond their own work for each other. More than a decade in, they remain close friends with the same shared passion: seeing ed leaders equipped and empowered in Christian schools.
